Few people build a garage on specially designed projects. Most often, the roofs of these structures have either a flat or a sloping surface. One way or another, but the question of how to cover the roof of the garage is faced by every motorist and garage owner.
There are various options for garage roofs, in addition to single-pitched and flat roofs, in some special cases, a gable roof is widely used, which allows you to supplement the garage with a spacious attic space, and if the designer or owner has a good taste, the garage will be difficult to distinguish from a full-fledged residential building.

DIY garage roof
Many want to save money on everything. Including covering your own garage roof, despite the fact that this is a rather complicated process.
The slightest flaws in the garage flooring can lead to disappointing consequences. One of them is the roof leaking.
If, however, it was decided to independently engage in the construction of the roof of the garage, then you need to clearly know the stages of its construction:
- To begin with, rafters are being erected;
- Waterproofing is installed;
- The roof is laid;
- A thermal insulation layer is created;
You can, of course, not insulate the garage. Then it will be easier to build a roof. However, the conditions in which the car will be kept in the winter will not be the best.
- A vapor barrier is being laid;
- Inner lining.
Special qualities of a garage roof
If a car enthusiast is going to independently cover the roof of his garage, then first of all the roofing material should be easy to install.
A large number of types of roofs should be laid exclusively by professionals. After all, only they have special skills.
The choice of material for covering a garage roof today largely depends on financial capabilities. Having determined the price category when buying a roof, be sure to pay attention to the fact that:
- The roof should protect the garage from water (snow and rain);
- Protection should also be from robbers;
- The roof of the garage should be beautiful and combined with the roof of the house, if they are nearby;
- If the choice fell on expensive roofing material, it is better to hire professional builders to lay it. After all, it requires special skills, but you don’t feel like letting the money go;
- You can independently lay down cheaper and easier to install material: roofing material, slate or metal sheets. True, to create a roof you will have to follow several important rules.
Garage roof covering with roofing material
Before using roofing material, you will need to install a special frame. If the roof of the garage is flat, then the task is simplified, because it is much easier to lay roofing material on top of reinforced concrete slabs. In this case, the coating will provide good waterproofing. Ruberoid is an excellent durable material at an affordable, inexpensive price.
Due to the fact that roofing material is a rolled roofing material, it is very easy to lay it. Moreover, it is worth noting that at least 3 layers should be done. Roof roofing is done as follows:
- For starters, a flat surface is poured with bitumen or grease. Only after this the first layer of the roofing roof is laid.
To lay strips of roofing material you need to overlap. So that the roof is reliable, you can additionally nail the lower layer along the edges with nails every half meter.
- On top of the first layer, bitumen grease is refilled. Another layer of roofing material is again laid on top.
When laying the second layer, the strips should lie only perpendicular to the first layer.
- The second layer of the roof is again smeared with bitumen and the last layer of roofing material is laid on top.
Covering the roof of the garage with roofing material will last for 15-20 years. Today in the market of roofing materials there is rubemast and euroroofing material - more modern analogues of ordinary roofing material. Their plasticity and reliability extend the service life by another 20 years.
When using roofing material, you need to stack it, avoiding creases. Otherwise, the roof will not last you long.
What is the difference between euroruberoid and ordinary ruberoid:
- Euroruberoid fits more easily. It is enough to heat the material itself, and it will stick to the surface. Additional bitumen or mastic is not required.
- As already mentioned, the life of the euroroofing material is much longer.
- But at the price of euroroofing material is 2 times more expensive than the usual roofing material.
Galvanized iron - reliable garage protection
The process of laying the roof of galvanized sheet iron is quite simple, despite the fact that it is carried out using equipment. That is why it is often necessary to resort to the work of experienced builders.
Due to the fact that when buying a sheet roof you can choose the exact size, its installation significantly reduces labor costs. The material is fastened using self-tapping screws every 0.5 cm. The main thing is that they are installed only in the depth of the corrugation. The sidewalls, the upper part and the edges of the roof are made out with specially acquired profiles. Covering the garage roof with galvanized iron will last up to 50 years.
Classic Slate Coating
Slate is a plate made of asbestos cement. Some time ago it was the most popular roofing material. Today, it is replaced by other more convenient and high-quality roofs. The fact is that the slate coating of the garage roof is very fragile. Before laying on the sheets, drill holes for special galvanized nails. During installation, the main thing is not to step on already laid sheets. Otherwise, they may break.
From time immemorial, slate has been used to equip the roof not only of garages, but also of houses. First of all, from the fact that the life of such sheets reaches 40 years. In addition, this is a fairly cheap material.
New - Garage Roof Polycarbonate
Another durable and very lightweight material for organizing a garage roof is cellular polycarbonate. Recently, he has gained very wide popularity, which is due to:
- High strength;
- Light weight;
- Good flexibility - this unique feature allows you to build garage roofs of absolutely any complexity;
- Transparency, which means that you can save money on the interior lighting of the garage;
- Durability no atmospheric phenomena affect the state and characteristics of polycarbonate;
- To repair and maintain such a roof in the future is very easy and simple;
- You can also install a polycarbonate roof on your own, this does not require special skills.
Do you need a waterproofing garage roof?
Regardless of what material is used for the roof of the garage roof, we must not forget about the waterproofing coating. Only he will be able to further protect your car from penetrating water into the room.
Particular attention should be paid to waterproofing a flat roof. After all, melted snow and rain puddles do not yet evaporate from it soon.
What provides waterproofing of the garage roof? You must purchase a special membrane. It is very thin, but at the same time it easily prevents moisture from entering the room.If the roof is also additionally insulated, then this membrane will be an indispensable material.
What is she doing?
- Does not let even the smallest drops of water inside;
- Easily releases steam from the room, reducing air humidity inside. Prevents fogging and wetting of the insulation. It turns out that cotton wool “breathes” for thermal insulation without losing its qualities.
When installing such a membrane, special gaps must be left between it and the roof. They are necessary for natural ventilation. Such a gap should not be less than 25mm. The gap should be between the membrane and the insulation, but a little larger - 50mm.
Slots are very easy to make. The membrane is laid on the rafters. In turn, a crate is also installed on top of it. There is another option for mounting the membrane. It is simply mounted on the finished frame. Only then does the “stuffing” of the bars as fasteners take place.
The membrane is a strip material. They are overlapped by 10-15 cm. It is very important that they are placed only from the bottom up. Installation of the membrane is very simple, because the manufacturer even marked a dashed overlap line on the material itself. The membrane should be glued with a special adhesive tape, which in addition also provides tightness. Directly to the frame, such a film is attached with iron brackets. This will require equipment such as a construction stapler.
A membrane is a very thin material. Therefore, there is a likelihood of damage to it, not only during installation, but also during operation. To avoid unnecessary expenses for repairing your roof, it is necessary to lay the membrane so that it is not too stretched, but does not sag on the frame. At the ends of the roof, the film should be wrapped, leaving the ends at 20cm. The manufacturer of the membrane always marks where the top and where the bottom side of the material is. It should never be confused when laying. Otherwise, the waterproofing material will not last a long time.
Is it worth it to insulate the roof of the garage?
If the climate of the places where you live is very warm, then perhaps the insulation of the garage is not required. The car in it will "feel" comfortable anyway. However, the terrain where in winter the temperature drops far beyond -0 degrees, it would be nice to insulate the garage.
The choice: to insulate the garage or not, is a purely personal matter. This is not a mandatory step in creating a roof. Although the insulation will help protect the car from many troubles.
Any garage owner can do their own roof insulation today. Modern materials allow this to be done by anyone who does not even have extensive experience in construction. Most often, a material such as glass wool is used to warm the garage roof. It is made in rolls. For convenience, its width is exactly equal to the rafter pitch. Another advantage of this material is its high density.
In the case when the thickness of the beams is sufficient to make a hole of 50 mm between the waterproofing material and the insulation, then the glass wool can be fixed between the rafters. If the thickness is insufficient, you will have to fix the insulation on top of the installed rafters. In any of these cases, the thickness of the insulating material will be about 10 cm.
On top of the glass wool you need to put a vapor barrier - a material that will easily protect the garage room from water vapor. And only on top of it are special bars filled. And then the lining is laid. She may be:
- Lining
- Dry plaster;
- Drywall;
- Or other stuff.
Roof Features of Flat Garage Roofs
Garage cooperatives are still preserved. There you can meet exactly the flat roofs, under which all the garages are located. How to choose a material for covering such a roof?
In this case, it is quite simple to use a roofing material.Moreover, reinforced concrete slabs that are already pre-impregnated with a waterproofing compound usually lie on top of the walls of such garages.
The flat roofs of garage cooperatives have several weaknesses, which are worth paying special attention to when laying roofs: joints between reinforced concrete slabs, the joint between the ceiling slab and the walls of the garage.
For flat roofs, ruberoid or any other rolled roofing material is best suited.
Roof features of sloping garage roofs
Neither effort nor time is wasted on the design of the roof of the garage. Usually a similar project is used with one or more slopes.
It doesn’t matter how many ramps the garage roof will have: two or one. Most importantly, their degree of inclination should not exceed 15.
Most often, the garage roof is made with the help of a lath, which is subsequently studded with wooden boards. In this regard, the question arises: what material is best used for roofing such a roof?
- If your garage is located in close proximity to the house (this usually happens if you live in a cottage), then the roof of the garage will look best if it is made from the same material as the roof of the house itself. Then the roof will turn out not only beautiful, but also durable. True, this is not the cheapest option. In addition to the fact that the materials are expensive, you also have to spend money on highly qualified specialists. Only they can force the quality to lay the material.
- A more modest budget can be spent if we consider the most common and simple materials for roofing a garage roof. Among them: corrugated board, galvanized steel sheets or ordinary and inexpensive slate. It’s very easy to work with any of these materials. You can even cope on your own. Therefore, you do not have to spend extra money on specialists.
It happens that the garage roof needs repair. You can determine this by checking the coating for leaks, cracks or other damage. Sometimes for this you need to walk on the roof. It doesn’t matter whether you are repairing the roof (although fragmentary patching of the roof will bring results for a short time), rebuilding it or creating a new coating, in any case, this is the same job. Before you make it, you will definitely have to choose a roofing material for the garage roof. After weighing all the pros and cons of this or that material, only you can choose the right roofing material that suits you perfectly:
- according to physical and mechanical characteristics;
- by aesthetic qualities;
- Of course, for the price.
It does not matter what type of roof you choose, the main thing is to make the installation very carefully. Particular attention must be paid to the little things. Only in this way will the garage roof become reliable and durable and protect the car from all kinds of atmospheric phenomena.
